How to Check Your Bitcoin Transaction Status

You've sent bitcoin — or you're waiting for a payment to arrive — and you want to know what's happening. Here's exactly how to check the status of any Bitcoin transaction.

What You Need: The Transaction ID (TXID)

To check a transaction's status, you need its Transaction ID (TXID) — a unique 64-character string. Find it in your wallet's transaction history or in your exchange's withdrawal history.

Method 1: Mempool.space (Recommended)

  1. Go to mempool.space
  2. Paste your TXID into the search bar
  3. Press Enter

You'll see: transaction status, confirmation count, fee rate, mempool position (if unconfirmed), and inputs/outputs.

Method 2: Check in Your Wallet App

  • Ledger Live: Accounts → select account → Operations tab
  • Trezor Suite: Account → Transactions section (pending shows hourglass icon)
  • Coinbase: Portfolio → select asset → Activity

Understanding Transaction Statuses

  • Unconfirmed/Pending: In the mempool, not yet in a block. Normal — don't worry unless it's been pending for several hours.
  • 1 Confirmation: In one block. Generally safe for small amounts.
  • 6+ Confirmations: Gold standard for large transactions. Effectively irreversible.

Why Is My Transaction Taking So Long?

Most likely cause: insufficient fee. Solutions:

  • Wait: Low-fee transactions eventually confirm when the mempool clears
  • Replace-by-Fee (RBF): If your wallet supports RBF, rebroadcast with a higher fee
  • Child-Pays-for-Parent (CPFP): If you're the recipient, create a high-fee transaction spending the unconfirmed funds

How Long Should It Take?

  • With adequate fees: 10-60 minutes
  • With low fees, quiet period: 1-3 hours
  • With low fees, congested period: Hours to days
