How to Set Up a Ledger Hardware Wallet (Step-by-Step)
A complete step-by-step guide to setting up your Ledger hardware wallet for the first time — from unboxing to your first Bitcoin transaction.
How to Set Up a Ledger Hardware Wallet (Step-by-Step)
If you've just bought a Ledger hardware wallet — or you're thinking about it — you're making a smart move. Hardware wallets are the gold standard for securing Bitcoin. Unlike keeping your coins on an exchange, a hardware wallet means only you control your private keys. Nobody else can touch your Bitcoin.
This guide walks you through everything from unboxing to sending your first transaction. It's written for beginners, but if you've been around Bitcoin for a while, you'll still find the setup checklist useful.
What You Need Before You Start
- Your Ledger device (Nano S Plus, Nano X, or Flex)
- The USB cable that came in the box
- A computer or smartphone
- A pen and the recovery sheet included in the box
- About 20–30 minutes
Important: Only buy Ledger directly from the official store or an authorised reseller. Never buy second-hand. A tampered device could compromise your funds before you even start.
Step 1: Check the Box for Tampering
Before you do anything, inspect the packaging. Ledger ships devices with tamper-evident seals. If the seal is broken or the box looks like it's been opened, do not use the device. Contact Ledger support and request a replacement.
Inside the box you should find:
- The Ledger device
- A USB cable
- Recovery phrase sheets (keep these)
- A keychain or lanyard (depending on model)
- A quick start guide
There is no pre-written recovery phrase in the box. If you find one, that's a scam — someone has tampered with the device.
Step 2: Download Ledger Live
Ledger Live is the official app for managing your Ledger device. It's available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and mobile (iOS and Android).
Download it only from: ledger.com/ledger-live
Avoid downloading from third-party sites or app stores you don't trust. Once downloaded, install and open it.
Step 3: Start the Onboarding Process in Ledger Live
When you open Ledger Live for the first time, you'll see a setup wizard. Select "Set up a new device" and choose your model.
The app will guide you through:
1. Connecting your device via USB
2. Powering it on (press the button or plug it in)
3. Choosing your PIN
Step 4: Set Your PIN
On the Ledger device itself, you'll be prompted to set a PIN. This is a 4–8 digit code you'll use every time you access the device.
Tips for a good PIN:
- Don't use obvious sequences like 1234 or your birthday
- Don't write it down in the same place as your recovery phrase
- Confirm the PIN by entering it twice
After 3 wrong PIN attempts, the device resets. That's a security feature, not a bug.
Step 5: Write Down Your 24-Word Recovery Phrase
This is the most critical step. Your 24-word recovery phrase (also called a seed phrase) is a human-readable backup of your private keys. If your Ledger is lost, damaged, or stolen, this phrase is the only way to recover your funds.
Ledger will display the words one at a time on the device screen. Write each word down carefully on the recovery sheet provided.
Golden rules for your recovery phrase:
- Never photograph it. Not on your phone, not with a webcam.
- Never type it into any website or app — not even Ledger Live.
- Never store it digitally — no Google Docs, no emails, no cloud storage.
- Store it somewhere physically secure — a fireproof safe is ideal.
- Consider making a second copy and storing it at a different location (bank vault, trusted family member's home).
The device will then ask you to confirm certain words to make sure you wrote them down correctly. Don't skip this step.
Step 6: Install the Bitcoin App on Your Ledger
Once setup is complete, go back to Ledger Live on your computer. Navigate to My Ledger (the device icon in the sidebar), then find Bitcoin in the app catalogue and click Install.
Your Ledger runs small apps for each cryptocurrency. The Bitcoin app handles all Bitcoin transactions and address generation.
Step 7: Add a Bitcoin Account in Ledger Live
Once the Bitcoin app is installed on your device:
1. Go to Accounts in Ledger Live
2. Click Add account
3. Select Bitcoin (BTC)
4. Follow the prompts — Ledger Live will connect to your device to generate your first Bitcoin address
You'll now see a Bitcoin account in Ledger Live with a balance of 0 BTC and a receive address.
Step 8: Receive Your First Bitcoin
Click on your Bitcoin account, then hit Receive. Ledger Live will show you a Bitcoin address — a long string of letters and numbers.
Always verify this address on the Ledger device itself before sending any funds to it. The screen on Ledger Live could theoretically be compromised by malware; the hardware device screen cannot.
Share this address with whoever is sending you Bitcoin (an exchange, a friend, etc.).
Step 9: Verify a Transaction (Optional But Recommended)
When you're ready to send Bitcoin, go to Send, enter the recipient address, amount, and network fee. Before broadcasting the transaction, your Ledger will ask you to physically confirm it on the device.
This is the key security feature. Even if your computer is infected with malware, an attacker cannot move your Bitcoin without you physically pressing the button on your hardware wallet.
Ongoing Security Tips
- Update Ledger Live regularly — updates often contain security patches
- Update your device firmware via Ledger Live when prompted
- Never share your recovery phrase — Ledger support will never ask for it
- Use a passphrase (25th word) if you want an extra layer of security for large amounts
Bottom Line
Setting up a Ledger hardware wallet takes less than 30 minutes and dramatically improves your Bitcoin security. The most important thing you'll do is write down and safely store your recovery phrase. Everything else is just interface.
If you don't have a Ledger yet, the Nano S Plus is the best entry-level option. The Nano X adds Bluetooth for mobile use, and the Flex has a larger touchscreen for easier navigation.
